O’Hare is being modernized while welcoming travelers every day. That means it’s worth taking a moment to plan your airport pickup, not because construction automatically changes where every car meets you, but because airport traffic, signs, and procedures can change.
Here’s our practical guide to what’s happening with ORDNext, what the airport currently says about pickups, and how a little coordination can make the ride home feel easier.
1. ORDNext is underway, not just a plan on paper
The City of Chicago’s ORDNext program is a major modernization of O’Hare’s core terminal facilities. It includes new concourses and the planned O’Hare Global Terminal, which is intended to replace Terminal 2.
In July 2026, the Chicago Department of Aviation reported that a 14-story tower crane had risen over the construction site for the new Concourse D. That’s a visible sign of progress, but construction milestones don’t necessarily tell you what to expect at your specific terminal curb on travel day.
For travelers, the helpful takeaway is simple: O’Hare is changing in phases, while airport operations continue. Check current airport information close to your trip, and follow the signs you see on the day.

2. The next milestones are planned in stages
According to the City’s latest announcement, Concourse D is planned to provide 19 gates, with completion scheduled for late 2028. The City also announced that the first phase of Concourse E is expected to add 14 gates, with groundbreaking planned for later in 2026. Its published sequence places those gates in 2030, the O’Hare Global Terminal in 2033, and the final 10 Concourse E gates in 2034.
These are announced plans and target dates, not promises that construction will happen on an exact schedule. We’re sharing them as a snapshot of the City’s current roadmap, not as a prediction of what your next airport pickup will look like.
The encouraging part is the direction: O’Hare is working toward more gate capacity and updated passenger facilities. The everyday part is that your best pickup plan still starts with your airline’s arrival information and current airport instructions.

3. Don’t assume construction means your pickup location has changed
This is one of the most useful things to remember: a modernization project does not automatically change every pickup procedure.
O’Hare’s current Drop Off and Pick Up guidance says arriving passengers using the general terminal curb pickup should meet their driver at the lower-level, outermost curb, following signs for Arrivals. The airport also says curbside waiting is prohibited; unattended vehicles may be ticketed and towed.
For a pre-arranged limousine or livery pickup, O’Hare’s taxi, limo, and rideshare information gives different instructions: contact the company after collecting your luggage, then follow the specific meeting details provided. The airport says these vehicles meet in designated lower-level areas, including the center lane (Lane 2), and notes that a vehicle may take 5–20 minutes to reach its designated pickup point.
Those are airport-wide instructions, not a guarantee that every provider uses the same exact meeting arrangement. When you book with Fiona’s Carriage, we’ll help coordinate the details for your trip. Please follow the pickup instructions we confirm with you, along with on-site airport signs.
4. Black-car pickups aren’t the same as app rideshare
At O’Hare, “car pickup” can mean several different things. The airport’s current ground-transportation page says black-car pickups are offered on the lower level of all terminals. App-based rideshare has designated pickup zones at Terminals 2 and 3 on the upper level.
That distinction matters if you’re comparing options or meeting someone who booked a different type of ride. Don’t assume a rideshare pole, taxi stand, family pickup curb, and pre-arranged black-car meeting point are interchangeable.
If your arrival terminal or pickup details change, pause before heading outside. Check your provider’s directions and the airport’s latest guidance. A quick confirmation is often easier than trying to find one another in a busy terminal roadway.
5. Give your chauffeur the details that make coordination smoother
A smooth airport ride starts before you land. When arranging your pickup, share the information that helps your transportation team plan around your arrival:
- Your airline and flight number
- Your scheduled arrival date and time
- The number of passengers and amount of luggage
- Any mobility or assistance needs
- A good way to reach you after landing
At Fiona’s Carriage, flight tracking is included with our airport transfer service, and our dispatch team works with our chauffeurs to coordinate the ride. Still, if your flight changes or your plans shift, let us know when you can. Clear details give everyone a better chance to stay in step.

6. Build in breathing room, and wait in the right place
Airports are busy places, and curbside space is for active loading, not waiting. If you’re picking up a friend or family member yourself, O’Hare recommends using its free Cell Phone Lot while your passenger deplanes and collects their bags. The airport lists the lot at 560 N. Bessie Coleman Drive.
For a pre-arranged ride, follow the pickup instructions you receive rather than circling the terminal. O’Hare’s livery guidance notes that reaching the designated meeting point can take time. Once you’ve collected your luggage, contacting your car service, as directed, helps keep the handoff clear.
If you’re traveling during a busy period, leave a little flexibility around the airport portion of your plans. A measured pace and a clear meeting plan can make a real difference.
7. Choose a ride for the care behind it, not only the vehicle
Plenty of services can bring a car to the airport. What makes a ride feel dependable is the human coordination around it: someone confirming the details, a chauffeur who knows where to meet you, and a team ready to help when plans need attention.
That’s the experience we work to create at Fiona’s Carriage Inc. Our airport transfers are designed around the person arriving, not simply the curb. Whether you’re coming home after a long flight, welcoming a client, or traveling with family, we want the first moments back in Chicago to feel calm, considered, and comfortable.
